Building the Culture or Tearing It Down? The Brockton Top 50 Debate

An artist out of Brockton just dropped a “Top 50 Brockton Artists” list and the whole city is talking.

But here’s my real question to the community… Why do we get upset every time a list or award drops when we’re still building and defining what New England hip-hop even looks like on a larger scale?

We say we want recognition.

We say we want platforms.

We say we want the culture documented.

But when somebody takes initiative and creates a list, suddenly it’s politics, favoritism, or “they forgot this person.”

So who should actually be responsible for making these lists?

The artists?

Media platforms?

Promoters?

The DJs?

The fans?

Or should it be a collective vote?

If we want structure, we have to build it.

If we want credibility, we have to support it.

And if we don’t like the list… maybe the answer is to create a better one.

Let’s talk.
